Android is an open-source mobile operating system based on the Linux kernel and other open-source software. It is primarily designed for touchscreen mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. The Open Handset Alliance is a consortium of developers responsible for its development, although Google is responsible for the most widely used version. The first commercial Android device, the HTC Dream, was launched in September 2008, following its unveiling in November 2007.
