The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, also known as NASA, is an independent agency of the U.S. federal government. NASA is responsible for civil space programs, aeronautics, and space research. The agency was established in 1958, succeeding the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Its mission is to give the U.S. space development effort a distinctly civilian orientation, focusing on peaceful applications in space science.
