WhatsApp Messenger is a messaging and voice-over-IP service owned by Meta. It allows users to send text, voice messages, video messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, locations, and other content. The client application runs on mobile devices and computers. To sign up, users need a cellular mobile telephone number. In January 2018, WhatsApp released a standalone business app called WhatsApp Business that can communicate with the standard WhatsApp client. The service was created by WhatsApp Inc. of Mountain View, California, and acquired by Facebook in February 2014 for approximately US$19.3 billion. By 2015, it became the world's most popular messaging application, and by February 2020, it had more than 2 billion users worldwide. As of 2016, it had become the primary internet communication in Latin America, the Indian subcontinent, and large parts of Europe and Africa.
