On January 8, 2024, VeriSilicon (688521. SH) unveiled its latest VC9800 series Video Processor Unit (VPU) IP. The new product line offers enhanced video processing performance to bolster its presence in data center applications. The advanced series IP targets the unique requirements of next-generation data centers, such as video transcoding servers, AI servers, virtual cloud desktops, and cloud gaming.

Features and Capabilities of the VC9800 Series

The VC9800 VPU IP has high performance, throughput, and server-level multi-stream encoding and decoding capabilities. This powerful unit can handle up to 256 streams and support all mainstream video formats, including the advanced format VVC. Leveraging Rapid Look Ahead encoding, the VC9800 series IP significantly improves video quality while maintaining a low memory footprint and encoding latency. With the ability to support 8K encoding and decoding, it offers enhanced video post-processing and multi-channel encoding at various resolutions, leading to an efficient transcoding solution.

"Our video post-processing capabilities have been extended to interact with NPUs smoothly, ensuring OpenCV-level accuracy," said Wei-Jin Dai, Executive VP and GM of the IP Division of VeriSilicon.

Integration with AI and Gaming

The VC9800 series VPU IP can seamlessly integrate with Neural Network Processor (NPU) IP, paving the way for a complete AI-video pipeline. When combined with VeriSilicon's Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) IP, the subsystem solution can deliver improved gaming experiences. The hardware virtualization, super-resolution image enhancement, and AI-powered encoding functions of this series IP also offer practical solutions for virtual cloud desktops.
